Foamflyer's RC Airplanes
Frequently Asked Questions
What kind of flying do you enjoy?
I enjoy just flying around with mild aerobatics, if the plane is capable of it. Rather than seeing how fast a plane can go, I’m usually more interested in seeing how slow a plane can fly and still remain in control. I don’t care about 3D or pattern stuff. I enjoy practicing touch-n-go’s also.
What kind of RC planes can you not stand?
I absolutely detest planes with fuselages that look like they were run over by a steamroller, which includes a lot of “3D” planes. I never have and never will build one like that. I'm not keen on cartoon planes either.
What’s your favorite airfoil?
The Clark-Y. The KFm3 is a close second.
What radio system did you learn to fly with?
It was an old Futaba gold case, six-channel. Of course it was FM (72 mHz). I'm talking about the late 1980s here. I also remember having an old Futaba "Attack" 4-channel AM, and when flying on a dry lake in the summer with thunderstorms in the distance, the plane would "jump" in the air every time lighting struck miles away.
What battery charger do you use?
I only have one charger that I've been using since 2009: a Turnigy Accucel 6. It's still going strong.
What radio systems do you normally fly with?
Currently I have three transmitters: A Hitec Optic 6 which is my normal-use system, a Hitec Laser 4 which was purchased specially for buddy-box training with the Optic, and an FRSky Taranis. I have a Corona 2.4 gHz module for the Optic that I sometimes use, but the receivers seem to usually crap out, so I still fly on 72 mHz, but I'm making the transition to using the Taranis exclusively.
What’s your favorite plane?
How many channels do you typically use?
It's very common for me to just build 3-channel planes with throttle, elevator, and aileron. This probably represents the majority of my planes.
What’s the weirdest thing you’ve ever seen?
The multicolored silhouette dancers at the beginning of the first James Bond 007 film, “Dr. No” (1962).
Has an element been named after you yet?
No, since I’m not a nuclear physicist and haven’t discovered any new elements. I’m sure there’s more to be discovered though. I think if an element was named for my discovery the atomic symbol would either be “So” or Ff”.
Have you ever seen a UFO??
Why yes, every time I watch "UFO" videos from 1970. Seriously I've seen a lot of strange things, but none that were saucer-shaped. By the way, "Earth vs the Flying Saucers" is a great movie.
